We Rang in 2026 on the MSC Grandiosa — Here's Everything About Our NYE Family Cruise

Count Down at sea, a submarine excursion in Cozumel, and my daughter dancing in a New Year's hat. This trip was everything.

I'll be honest — when I first pitched a New Year's Eve cruise to my family, I wasn't sure how it would go over. New Year's at sea? No countdown parties with friends back home? Just us, the ocean, and a ship full of strangers?

Spoiler: it was one of the best decisions we've ever made as a family.

We sailed on the **MSC Grandiosa** — a stunning ship that I'd been wanting to experience for a while — and it did not disappoint. Here's the full story of our trip, from embarkation day to the moment we watched fireworks over the water as 2026 began.

The Ship: MSC Grandiosa

The Grandiosa is a gorgeous ship. It's big without feeling overwhelming, and the design is sleek and modern. The atrium is stunning — all glass and light — and the kids immediately started running around exploring every deck.

What I loved most was how well-organized everything was. The ship's app made it easy to check the daily schedule, book specialty dining, and keep track of where everyone was. If you're sailing with MSC for the first time, download the app before you board — it's genuinely useful.

Cozumel, Mexico — The Submarine Excursion

Our first port was Cozumel, and we had booked the **Atlantis Submarines** excursion — something my daughter had been asking about for months after seeing it in a video online.

I'm so glad we did it. We descended about 100 feet below the surface and spent 45 minutes watching sea turtles, colorful fish, and coral reefs drift past the windows. My daughter was absolutely glued to the glass the entire time. The submarine captain was wonderful with the kids — patient, enthusiastic, and clearly loved his job.

This is one of those excursions that sounds gimmicky but is genuinely magical. If you're in Cozumel with kids, book it. It sells out fast, so reserve it before you board.

**Pro tip:** Book Atlantis Submarines directly through the cruise line or their website — don't wait until you're at the port. We booked ours three weeks before sailing and still got our preferred time slot.

The Beach Day

One of our port days was a beach stop — and this photo says everything. My Son and daughter playing in the sand, the MSC Grandiosa sitting right there in the background like a floating hotel. I stood there for a moment just taking it in.

There's something about seeing your cruise ship from the beach that never gets old. It's this reminder that you have this incredible floating home waiting for you, and all you have to do right now is play in the sand.

We rented beach chairs and an umbrella, ordered some drinks, and spent the entire day doing absolutely nothing productive. It was perfect.

Cozumel — Señor Frog's

Okay, I know Señor Frog's is a tourist trap. I know. But when you're in Cozumel with kids who want balloon hats and yard drinks, you go to Señor Frog's. And you have the best time.

The balloon artist made my daughter a unicorn hat. My husband got a shark. I got a flower crown. We ordered the biggest drinks on the menu, took approximately 47 photos, and laughed until our sides hurt.

Sometimes the "tourist trap" is the tourist trap because it's genuinely fun. No regrets.

New Year's Eve on the Ship

This was the moment I'd been most excited about — and it delivered.

MSC put on a full New Year's Eve party on the main deck. There was live music, a DJ, party hats and glasses for everyone, and an energy that I can only describe as electric. Thousands of people from all over the world, all on the same ship, all counting down together.

This photo is my daughter and husband on the top deck, soaking in every moment of the countdown — hats on, drinks in hand, completely in their element. Meanwhile, my son had found his people. He spent the night on the dance floor making new friends from all over the world, absolutely in his glory. And me? I was the one behind the camera, capturing all of it — every laugh, every dance move, every firework reflection in their eyes.

I wouldn't have traded that role for anything. Sometimes the best way to be present is to be the one preserving the memory.

There is something deeply special about welcoming a new year at sea. You're untethered from everything — no work emails, no obligations, no familiar routine. It's just your family and the ocean and the promise of a fresh start.

The Sea Day After New Year's Eve

This photo? That's not dinner. That's brunch — because after staying up until the early hours ringing in 2026, nobody in our family was waking up early the next day. We rolled in late, found a table with a gorgeous ocean view, and took our sweet time.

My daughter, true to form, made a beeline for the pizza. I have genuinely never seen a child eat that much pizza in my life. She bragged about it for the rest of the trip. The ship's pizza became her personal benchmark for all future pizza — nothing has compared since.

My husband and I had quietly booked a couples massage for that afternoon, which turned out to be one of the best decisions of the whole trip. While we were in the spa completely melting into the tables, the kids were having the time of their lives — my daughter at the kids club and my son at the teens club. Everyone was exactly where they wanted to be.

That sea day after New Year's Eve was pure, unhurried bliss. No ports, no schedules, no rushing. Just ocean, good food, and the kind of deep exhale you only get when you're truly on vacation.

**Pro tip:** Book your spa treatments before you board — sea days fill up fast, especially the day after a big party night.

The Teen Club: Where My Son Found His People

If you're cruising with a teenager, let me tell you something: the Teen Club on MSC Grandiosa is the real deal.

My son — who I was honestly a little worried about, because what 15-year-old wants to spend New Year's Eve with his family on a cruise ship? — walked into that Teen Club on the first night and didn't look back. He made friends from all over the world. He danced. He stayed out later than the rest of us. He had the kind of trip that teenagers dream about but rarely get.

This photo was taken right before he headed in for the NYE countdown party. Look at him — all white outfit, cross necklace, hands in his pockets, completely unbothered. That's a kid who knows he's exactly where he's supposed to be.

The Teen Club runs ages 15–17 and has a separate space from the younger kids club. There are gaming areas, a social lounge, organized activities, and plenty of unstructured time to just hang out. It's supervised without feeling supervised — which is exactly what teenagers need.

**For parents of teens:** Do not skip the cruise because you think your teenager won't enjoy it. Register them for the Teen Club on day one, let them go, and watch what happens.

What I'd Tell Anyone Considering a NYE Cruise

Do it. Seriously.

Here's why: a New Year's Eve cruise removes all the stress of the holiday. You don't have to find a restaurant, fight for a reservation, worry about parking, or deal with crowds on the way home. Everything is handled. The party comes to you.

And the experience of being at sea as the year turns — watching fireworks over the water, surrounded by your family, with nowhere to be and nothing to do but celebrate — is unlike anything you'll experience at home.

We're already talking about doing it again next year.
