From packing the right shoes to booking excursions early — here's what I wish I knew before we sailed.
Planning your first family cruise is exciting — but there's a lot the brochures don't tell you. After cruising with my own family and helping hundreds of families plan their first voyages, here are the five things I wish someone had told me.
The best shore excursions sell out fast — sometimes weeks before the ship even departs. Don't wait until you're on the ship to browse the excursion desk. Log into your cruise line's app as soon as your booking is confirmed and reserve the activities your family is most excited about.
You'll need: flip flops for the pool deck, comfortable walking shoes for port days, dress shoes for formal nights, and water shoes for beach excursions. Most families underpack shoes and regret it by day two.
When you first board, your cabin won't be ready for a few hours. Head straight to the buffet — it's open, the food is great, and it gives the kids something to do while you wait. Avoid the main dining room on embarkation day; it's usually overwhelmed.
Even large ships rock in rough seas. Pack motion sickness bands and Dramamine for every family member, especially kids. The first night at sea can catch people off guard.
Water, lemonade, and iced tea at the buffet are complimentary. Everything else — specialty coffees, sodas, juices at the bar — costs extra unless you've purchased a beverage package. Budget accordingly or buy the package upfront if your family drinks a lot of sodas.
